Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
